It includes site documentation and all published port profiles, including available histories and photo attribution. It is not an export of the vessel, wreck, platform or observation databases. For those changing records, follow their linked public HTML pages and read the displayed timestamps. It contains no accounts, private vessel ownership information, credentials or live webcam frames. Its generation date is not an observation date. ## Interpreting data Records can be historical, incomplete or uncertain. AIS coverage is uneven; no reports does not establish an empty port. Forecasts are model estimates, not measurements. Observation time, forecast valid time, forecast issue time and retrieval time have different meanings. Missing values are unavailable, not zero. Local tidal datums must not be compared as common elevations. WakeAtlas is an exploration and research service, not a navigation or emergency-advice service. Find a ship by name or identifier and select it to locate its stored position. Report age and coverage matter. Take me to the ship clears the ship-name filter so surrounding vessels can remain visible; other chosen filters still apply. On Ports, choose a port using the selector or its direct URL. Photo, available history, camera and map link refer to that profile. Camera choices keep the provider's embedded player; playback may require pressing Play. Camera operation and availability are controlled by World Port Cams. Show on map opens the port reference location. AIS near this port opens a separate panel with 2, 5 or 10 km radius (5 km default). Southampton also has a daily refreshed PortWatch pilot showing the latest 30 available cargo port-call days. These are AIS-derived historical estimates, not nearby-vessel counts; missing dates are not zero. IMF attribution and terms accompany the data. This radius is not an official port boundary. The count represents received reports within the chosen area and report-age window, not all ships physically present. Buoy observations can be filtered and sorted. Keep the observation timestamp, units, station identity and provider quality flags with any interpretation. Unusual values are prompts for investigation, not automatically sensor faults. ## Browser-agent capabilities In browsers supporting document.modelContext, the globe exposes list_site_pages and set_explore_menu. The former returns existing navigation labels and paths; the latter opens or closes Explore only. Port pages expose list_port_profiles with names, countries, slugs, direct URLs and selected port. The existing get_vessel_observation tool reads the selected displayed vessel and its provenance, subject to its selection and playback checks. These optional tools do not replace authentication and are not available to every AI reader. Plain links remain available without these tools. ## Current ocean research coverage The research page is https://wakeatlas.uk/ocean-research. Provider downloads occur in a server background worker and use shared disk caches. Failure can retain an older snapshot with a stale warning. Galleons began arriving from Asia in 1565, linking the Pacific coast of New Spain with Manila and bringing the harbour into a trading network spanning Asia, the Americas and Europe. The valuable cargoes also made the port a target. Following a Dutch attack in 1615, the Fort of San Diego was built the next year to defend the harbour and arriving ships. The galleon connection continued from the sixteenth century into the early nineteenth century. The accompanying photograph records the bay in February 2010. It provides a dated view of the waterfront and anchorage rather than evidence of present-day harbour conditions. King William III inaugurated the route on 1 November 1876, after more than a decade of construction. The city archives describe the difficult conditions endured by the labourers who dug it, many living in makeshift accommodation. The new connection encouraged a remaking of the waterfront. Warehouses appeared along the Oostelijke Handelskade, while Central Station opened in 1889 on three artificial islands. Bringing railways close to the quays helped connect maritime cargo with inland transport. Amsterdam’s shipping also benefited from the Suez Canal, opened in 1869, which shortened voyages to Asia. The waterfront photograph shows the passenger-terminal area in 2022; it is one part of a port landscape shaped by successive changes in transport and trade. The two basins now known as Bonapartedok and Willemdok became accessible to ships in 1811 and 1812. A larger dock was constructed farther downstream between 1856 and 1860, forming the centre of today’s Kattendijkdok. Initially the old and new dock complexes remained separate, each with its own lock. Extensions and the Verbindingsdok connected them in 1869. The names Bonapartedok and Willemdok were adopted in 1903. A commemorative column recalls Napoleon’s role in their construction and Willem I’s transfer of the docks to the city in 1815. Its name refers to the volcanic reefs that sheltered boats along this part of Lanzarote’s coast. The natural protection helped establish the settlement’s maritime role. By the late sixteenth century, expanding trade created demand for warehouses and accommodation. The growing port also faced attacks: a raid in 1571 devastated the settlement. Fishing, commerce and the need to defend the waterfront are intertwined in the town’s early history. The photograph shows the working port at Los Mármoles in August 2011, with cargo containers, industrial facilities and harbour vessels. The harbour’s sailing identity grew around the Royal Yacht Squadron, founded in 1815, and the international regatta activity associated with Cowes Week. The Cowes Harbour Act of 1897 established a commission to manage and improve the harbour. Its first board met on 7 December that year, bringing together local councils, traders, yachting interests and national bodies. A new pier opened in 1902 and became a centre of waterfront activity. The Ballast Board name belongs to that early period; the Dublin Port and Docks Board followed in 1867. These changing institutions reflect the long relationship between the city and its working waterfront. The port’s archive preserves engineering drawings, photographs, registers and employee records. Its employee Name Book covers 1906–1925, offering a way to investigate the people behind the docks as well as the infrastructure. Dublin Port appointed a full-time archivist in 2017. Its digital archive provides a route into the port’s historical collections; archive photographs have their own reuse conditions. In the nineteenth century, fishing, timber and mineral traffic increasingly connected the sheltered harbour with markets across the Great Lakes. The opening of the Sault Ste. Marie locks in 1855 strengthened those connections. Rail reached Duluth in 1870, and the Duluth Ship Canal opened the following year. Grain, coal and, later, Mesabi Range iron ore helped establish Duluth-Superior as a major interchange between railways and lake shipping. A further turning point came in 1959, when the St. Lawrence Seaway opened to deep-draft navigation. Oceangoing vessels could then reach the port from overseas, and the Clure Public Marine Terminal opened that same year. Saint Barthélemy passed from France to Sweden in 1784, and the town was renamed in honour of King Gustav III. Trade brought prosperity during the Napoleonic Wars, followed by a period of decline. The island returned to France in 1878. Fort Oscar, Fort Karl and Fort Gustav recall the importance of protecting the harbour during its earlier development. Its waterfront landmarks include the St. Pauli landing stages, whose construction began in 1840, and the nearby Elbe Tunnel, opened in 1911. These remain reminders of the movement of passengers and workers through the harbour. The Second World War devastated the port: the port organisation records that 80 percent of its facilities were destroyed. Reconstruction restored the harbour as an important part of the city’s economy. A later turning point came on 31 May 1968, when American Lancer, a fully cellular container ship, arrived at Burchardkai. Container handling transformed the working waterfront, while older port land acquired new uses. From 2003, HafenCity began taking shape between Kehrwiederspitze and the Elbe bridges. It served fishing and cargo movements along the Baltic coast and to nearby Fehmarn. Silting sometimes forced larger ships to remain outside while smaller vessels carried their goods into the harbour. Nineteenth-century improvements enlarged the harbour and deepened its approach. The southern mole was developed between 1809 and 1834, the northern mole followed in 1838, and a western mole was added in 1870. The town museum preserves this seafaring heritage through ship portraits and models, including vessels built at the local Tornoe yard. Containerisation transformed that network in the early 1970s: the first berth at Kwai Chung began operating in 1972, establishing the nucleus of today’s Kwai Tsing container complex. Port management also changed with technology. Before 1989, the Marine Department tracked vessels through a communication centre and three signal stations. The Prussian naval station moved to the city in 1865, followed by its designation as an imperial naval port in 1871. Shipyards expanded along the eastern shore while naval establishments developed on the western side of the fjord. These changes brought workers, businesses and a much larger population to the city. Commercial harbour development continued alongside the naval presence. Kiel’s city archive records that an 1871 agreement with the navy enabled reclamation at the Hörn; by 1882 the city had gained 5.5 hectares of quays and storage space. Disputes over control of the harbour later led to a legal case beginning in 1899. The Kiel Canal opened in 1895, adding another major strand to the port’s maritime identity. Kiel’s shipping museum presents that canal history together with the development of modern passenger services, including Scandinavian ferries and cruise ships. The harbour therefore connects industrial and naval history with the passenger traffic visible on the fjord. Henry Flagler’s companies later developed waterfront port facilities beside Biscayne Boulevard. The city bought the seaport in 1913, bringing this growing transport asset into municipal ownership. Passenger services expanded in the 1940s with routes to Havana, Nassau and the Lesser Antilles. After Dade County acquired the port in the following decade, the search for more room led to Dodge Island. County officials announced the new location in July 1959. Freight operations at the new island port began on 4 October 1964. The Miami-Dade Public Library’s archive account records the transfer of the old port’s operations by 1967. Following the great fire of 1624, the town was rebuilt beneath the fortress at Akersneset, with new harbour facilities on the western side of Bjørvika. Timber exports helped sustain the city’s trade, alongside imports such as grain, salt and iron. Port operations were regulated by law in 1735. In 1842 the harbour became a municipal business with separate finances. Steamships brought demand for stronger quays and more efficient handling; the West Railway’s opening in 1872 also increased Pipervika’s importance. A development competition in 1897 preceded major works around Akershus Fortress between 1898 and 1911. The city’s relationship with its waterfront changed again when the council adopted the Fjord City plan in 2000, allowing former port areas to be redeveloped while concentrating cargo activity in the southern harbour. The modern settlement was founded in 1953 as Puerto Luisa and developed primarily as a Chilean naval base. Its later name honours the naval commander John Williams Wilson. The harbour supports fishing vessels and maritime services in the waters south of Tierra del Fuego. Alongside its naval role, tourism and support for scientific research became increasingly important from the late twentieth century. As ships grew, the older route through the Voorne Canal became too narrow and shallow. In 1858, an engineering recommendation led by Pieter Caland proposed a new passage through the dunes at Hoek van Holland. The first vessel used the newly cut Nieuwe Waterweg in March 1872. Opening the route did not solve every problem immediately: further silting meant improvement continued, with the route fully in use by 1895. The waterway supported rapid port growth alongside industrialisation in Germany. Rotterdam provided a link between the North Sea and the Ruhr’s demand for raw materials. The Eastern Docks developed in stages, with the Outer Dock in place by 1842 and the Inner Dock following in 1851. The railway helped bring London closer, supporting Southampton’s growth as a passenger port. Reclaimed land and larger dock basins allowed the port to accommodate the ocean liners that became central to its identity. By 1936, Southampton handled around 560,000 ocean-going passengers, approximately 46 percent of the UK total. The waterfront also played a significant wartime role, commemorated by the US Army plaque at Dock Gate 8. Before 2008, the Vancouver, Fraser River and North Fraser port authorities managed separate areas. The federal government authorised their amalgamation to take effect on 1 January 2008. The harbour’s own history records that it supplied fifteen ships and 263 mariners for the siege of Calais in 1347, and six ships for the campaign against the Spanish Armada in 1588. In 1848 Captain Joseph Cosens established the business that became closely associated with Weymouth’s paddle steamers. Portland ferry crossings and coastal excursions developed alongside ship repair and engineering work. The company’s steamers also served in wartime; Emperor of India took part in the Dunkirk evacuation. The harbour tramway opened in 1865, initially with horse-drawn trains, linking the railway with cargo and ferry services. Locomotives followed, and passengers could travel directly to the quay for Channel Island sailings. Regular goods traffic ended in 1972 and the last passenger train ran in 1987; a final train movement took place in May 1999.
