Remains of an English transport vessel (originally Dutch fluit in the Dutch East India service) · Source-reported sinking date: 1684
Damaged by the storm and the surf action
Historical background Schiedam began as a Dutch merchant vessel. After capture by corsairs and subsequent recapture by the Royal Navy, she carried people and military equipment home from the English evacuation of Tangier. She was wrecked off Gunwalloe, Cornwall, in 1684. Archaeological investigations by David Gibbins and Mark Milburn have examined surviving guns and other cargo, helping explain the ship’s final voyage.
