Two waterfronts, one harbour
Cowes and East Cowes developed on opposite banks of the Medina, with maritime employment and boatbuilding shaping both communities. The harbour’s sailing identity grew around the Royal Yacht Squadron, founded in 1815, and the international regatta activity associated with Cowes Week.
The Cowes Harbour Act of 1897 established a commission to manage and improve the harbour. Its first board met on 7 December that year, bringing together local councils, traders, yachting interests and national bodies.
A new pier opened in 1902 and became a centre of waterfront activity. Steamers and ferries connected Cowes with Southampton and Portsmouth, while sailing clubs used the pier during regatta week.
